Washington has a half-price, day of show outlet called TicketPlace. Here is a link to the site:

There is a local number you can call to see what tickets are being offered that day, but to secure a ticket, you have to purchase at their office, which is near the National Archives metro station. A number of performing arts companies/venues, including Kennedy Center productions, offer tickets through TicketPlace.

If you have your heart set on a specific performance, I would not recommend TIcketPlace, since availability changes every day. But if you are open to seeing maybe a couple of different things, it's hard to beat a half priced ticket.

You can also check the Kennedy Center's web site for tickets and availability:

have fun!
